What is diabetes mellitus?
Normally, Blood glucose level is regulated by the body. Sometimes it strays outside the range. Diabetes mellitus is a common group of metabolic disorder that is characterized by chronic hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia in diabetes results from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. Modern life style is the prime cause of the disease.
Diabetes mellitus can be divided into two.
1. Type 1 – characterized by an absolute deficiency of insulin secretion caused by destruction of beta cells.
2. Type 2 – caused by a combination of peripheral resistance to insulin action and an inadequate compensatory response of insulin secretion by the pancreatic beta cells.
Risk factors

⦁ Intake of tinned and preserved food
⦁ Mental stress
⦁ Lack of exercise

⦁ Visual disturbances can be seen in uncontrolled diabetes mellitus.
Complications of diabetes mellitus
⦁ High blood glucose can damage blood vessels in eye causing retinopathy, cataract and glaucoma.
⦁ Excess blood glucose overworks the kidney resulting in nephropathy.
⦁ Damage nerves in the peripheral nervous system. It may result in pain and numbness.
⦁ Increased risk of stroke and cerebrovascular disease.
⦁ Increase risk of coronary heart disease
⦁ Peripheral vascular disease – feet wounds are likely to heal slowly contributing to gangrene.
Some Ayurveda remedies for reduce blood glucose level.
⦁ Intake of ten fresh fully grown curry leaves every morning for three months.
⦁ Intake of a tablespoonful of purslane seeds with half a cupful of water, once a day, for 3 months.
⦁ Intake of tablespoonful of gooseberry juice mixed with a cupful of bitter gourd juice, once a day, for 2 months.
⦁ Intake of 15 gram of the mixture of fenugreek powder, turmeric powder and gooseberry powder in equal quantities, thrice a day for 45 days.
⦁ Intake of a teaspoonful of fig fruit powder with a little bee honey, once a day.
⦁ Intake of two tablespoonfuls of the paste made with chebulic myrobalan and gooseberry fruit in equal quantities, mixed with 1/8 of that quantity of turmeric root twice a day.
